How is everyone doing?

It's getting hotter little by little, so please be careful of heat stroke.

Masks and heat stroke don't go well together, so I rarely wear a mask when I don't need to, such as outdoors.

It is difficult to find a balance between infection prevention and heat stroke prevention, but don't push yourself too hard and stay hydrated while taking care of infection prevention.

So, this article is about " Let's introduce the event. Following the introduction of the dancers, I think this could be another series. (laughs)

If you know the name of the event but don't know what it's all about, you should definitely read this article.

In this article, I'm going to write about Summer Dance Forever (SDF).

JAPAN EDITION will be held in Osaka in October, so get to know what kind of event it is now!

ree

This event is also held in Japan, and the system of the event is quite interesting.

This time I'm going to introduce you to the features and ways to enjoy this event, one of my favorites!

Judges also participate in the battle

In most events, judges do not participate in battles, or if judges do, they only participate in exhibition battles, but in SDF, judges do participate in battles.

So, being offered the position of Judge is the same as being offered the position of Battle Guest.

Therefore, those who are satisfied or arrogant enough to be invited as judges may be hurt in a battle. lol

Dancers who don't usually participate in battles are sometimes judged, and there are opportunities to battle against such dancers. I think this is something that not many other events have.

But of course, you have to make it to the top 3 to battle against the judges.

The tournament system is also a bit unorthodox.

  1. Audition-style qualifying rounds to select 12 (or 24 or 48 if there are many entries).

  2. 1on1 battles to Top 3

  3. Then, the judges participate in the battle, and the Top 3 dancers choose the judges they want to battle against. → Top 3 winning dancers + judges = Top 6 battle

  4. Three dancers make it to the top 3

  5. One of the top 3 dancers chooses one of the dancers who did not make it to the top 3 and brings the dancer back to the battle (call out) → Become a Top 4 battle (semi-final)

  6. From here on, it's the same as a normal battle.

To put it simply, since there are three judges, the qualifiers are selected in multiples of three, and after the "Judge Battle," one more battler is added to make the top four.笑

This is a tournament system that was designed specifically for judges to participate in.

The event is already exciting from the beginning of the tournament, but the "Judge Battle" is one of the highlights of the event, and with a big showpiece at the end of the event, it's an exciting system to watch until the end.

The system is really creative.

Judge System

The next thing to introduce is the judge's system.

This is another great feature of SDF.

As mentioned above, judges dancers will be participating in the battle from the end of the event. So, who will be the judge?

The answer is: "Let the battlers themselves say whether they think they have won or lost."

The dancers themselves will answer, "I thought I won" or "I thought I lost.

It's also simple but deep and interesting to see the personality of the people.

I think this system has created a lot of drama in the past.

Dancers who confidently say "I won" are also cool, and dancers who honestly say "I lost" are also very passionate.

It's an interesting system to ask the people who are battling, because there are things that only they can understand.

And if they both say "I won".

  1. Top 6 (the first round of the judge battle) is judged by two other judges who are not battling at that time → If the judges are split, the crowd choose.

  2. After the top 3, ask the battlers "you win or lose?" If both battlers say "win", they will go one more round or the crowd choose.

If the winner is not decided after one more round, the winner will be decided by how loud the crowd cheers!

This is also easy to understand: the winner is determined by either 'one of the battlers says I lost' or 'how loud the crowd cheers'.

When both battlers say "I won," the MC decides whether to have "one more round" or "the crowd choose" based on the feeling of the moment. lol

Since the system uses cheers to choose the winner, the crowd who came to watch is also quite important in creating the event. I think this is the key to creating a unity in the venue.

This is another creative system that makes everyone in the venue a part of the event, no matter what.

SDF prepares a decibel meter to measure the volume of cheers, so that the volume of cheers can be quantified and visualized to ensure fair judging.

If you're at the venue, don't be shy and shout loudly only to the one you think won!

The winner will be the next judge

And one of the features of SDF is the system that the winner will be a judge at the next SDF.

This is what I mean by "next SDF" here, but it's not strictly the same event.

SDF is held in Japan and Amsterdam in the Netherlands, so the Japanese champion will judge in Amsterdam and the Amsterdam champion will judge in Japan.

If you keep winning, you'll be a judge all the time. lol

Of course it's a great opportunity to win and go to Amsterdam, but it's also a great opportunity to see the amazing dancers from overseas in Japan.

In general events, you can only see overseas guests dance in judge moves or workshops, but in SDF, you can see them battle. This is a very good opportunity.

And I think it is fantastic that SDF is promoting international exchange through this event.

I was supposed to be in Amsterdam last year because I won the 2019 SDF Japan, but a tough opponent, Covid-19, has been preventing me from traveling.

By the way, I heard that SDF Amsterdam will be held online again this year, so if you feel comfortable with online battles, please do not hesitate to participate. I don't like online battles, so I won't be participating in this year's SDF. lol

Afterword

So, this was a new series called " Introducing the Event".

I'm sure it's easier to understand if you see it at the venue than to explain it in writing, but I'm glad if this article has made you a little more interested.

An event so influential that it is one of the few in the world.

And it's being held in Japan, as well.

Nothing could be luckier than that.

SDF Japan, which has been held every year, will be held in Osaka on October 3 this year as JAPAN EDITION.

If you've never been to this event, next time you should be there to experience it!

(Except when there is no audience due to Covid-19.)

There probably won't be any international guests, but I've heard rumors that some amazing Japanese dancers will be participating as judges, so check this out too!
